The first half Tuesday night at the Rip Griffin Center in Lubbock, Texas was full of momentum swings.
The second half belonged to Lubbock Christian it held on to defeat Angelo State, 76-70, in a thrilling NCAA DII South Central Regional final. Lubbock Christian (29-5) advanced to the NCAA DII Elite 8 for the third time in program history. The Lady Chaps will play Tuesday, March 26 in Columbus, Ohio. The remaining eight teams will be reseeded before the Elite Eight begins.
Lubbock Christian jumped out to a 20-9 lead at the end of the first quarter. Angelo State quickly answered by outscoring the Lady Chaps 27-13 in the second quarter as the Belles took a 36-33 lead in to the locker room.
Lubbock Christian came out of the locker room and quickly erased the halftime deficit on its way to taking a four-point lead heading into the fourth quarter.
The fourth quarter provided plenty of dramatics as Lubbock Christian opened the final quarter with an 11-2 run to take a 67-54 lead with 4:32 remaining in the game.
Angelo State fought back behind senior Marquita Daniels as the Belles went on a 16-6 run to close within three points at 73-70 with 38 seconds remaining in the contest.
Lubbock Christian hit three more free throws and hold Angelo State scoreless to celebrate another trip to the Elite 8.
Maddie Chitsey recorded a double-double with 26 points and 10 rebounds for Lubbock Christian. Olivia Robertson added 22 points and Allie Schulte chipped in 12 points for the Lady Chaps. Marquita Daniels led Angelo State with a game-high 27 points. De’Anira Moore almost recorded a double-double as she scored 16 points and secured nine rebounds while Maria Delgado added 11 points for the Belles.
Angelo State has a very successful season end with a 26-6 overall record and their program’s second appearance in the NCAA DII South Central Regional final.
