WBB NCAA DII National Championship: Lubbock Christian claims second title

The national championship should always be a classic when the two best teams in a sport meet to determine a champion. But let's be honest, most championship games are duds.

Lubbock Christian and Southwestern Oklahoma State gave us the classic we all crave in the NCAA DII women’s national title game on Friday night as Lubbock Christian won its second national title in program history with a thrilling 95-85 victory in double overtime.

Two players from Lubbock Christian were on the last national title team in 2016 but seniors Olivia Robertson and Bobbi Chitsey didn't see playing time on that team.

The seniors made sure they took home another ring as Olivia Robertson scored the first five points in the second overtime and Bobbi Chitsey drove a dagger in the Lady Bulldogs with a 3-pointer to give the Lady Chaps their biggest lead of the night 85-75 with 1:49 remaining in the second overtime.

The Lady Chaps and their seniors would not have been in position for their second overtime heroics without junior Maddi Chitsey and sophomore Allie Schulte.

Lubbock Christian was trailing by three, 75-72, with 11 seconds remining in the first overtime. The Lady Chaps went to their star Olivia Robertson who missed a 3-point attempt but Allie Schulte scooped up the offensive rebound and found Maddi Chitsey open for a three with three seconds left to send the game to the second overtime.

The game was a battle of which team would have the best quarter until overtime. Lubbock Christian opened the game on a 10-0 run and ended the first quarter with a 17-11 lead.

SWOSU responded by making five 3-pointers in the second quarter as the Lady Bulldogs showed they could make shots as soon as they crossed the half court line and took a 33-26 lead into the locker room.

Lubbock Christian would quickly respond in the third quarter and looked to take control in the third quarter after outscoring SWOSU 29-16 in the third quarter to take a six-point lead into the fourth quarter.

SWOSU once again responded in the fourth quarter as the Lady Bulldogs full court pressure defense would cause problems for the Lady Chaps. SWOSU would tie the game at 66 with 1:24 remining in regulation on a layup by Hayden Priddy.

Each team would have opportunities to score at the end of regulation but neither team would be successful and the game entered the first overtime.

SWOSU would look to be in control throughout the first overtime but was unable to gain enough separation as they twice held a 3-point lead until Maddi Chitsey nailed the dagger for the Lady Chaps to send the game to the second overtime.

Lubbock Christian was led by Olivia Robertson who scored 24 points while Maddi Chitsey recorded a double-double with 22 points and 13 rebounds. Allie Schulte scored 17 points while Caitlyn Cunyus contributed 10 points and Bobbi Chitsey finished her career for the Lady Chaps with 10 points, eight rebounds and five assists.

SWOSU was led by Hailey Tucker who recorded a double-double with a game-high 30 points and 16 rebounds while Bethany Franks added 25 points and Hayden Priddy chipped in 12 points for the Lady Bulldogs.

SWOSU entered the game on a 35-game winning streak and finish the season with a 35-2 record.
