BREAKING: Crosby G PJ Haggerty and Gruver G Bailey Maupin named first-ever Mr. and Miss Texas Basketball Players of the Year

LEWISVILLE — Dave Campbell’s Texas Basketball, the leading publication for high school and college basketball in the state of Texas, and Chicken Express, are proud to announce Crosby senior guard PJ Haggerty and Gruver senior guard Bailey Maupin as the first-ever Mr. and Miss Texas Basketball Players of the Year for the 2021-22 basketball season.

Mr. and Miss Texas Basketball, presented by Chicken Express, annually recognizes the most outstanding basketball players in the state of Texas. For 14 weeks, we took submissions for Mr. and Miss Texas Basketball Player of the Week before recognizing weekly winners based on fan vote.

Haggerty, a 6-foot-3 scoring guard from Crosby was one of the top scorers in the nation this past season, averaging over 30 points per game and leading his Cougars all the way to the regional finals for the first time in over 40 years before eventually falling to the eventual two-time state champion Beaumont United Timberwolves. This year, Haggerty put up scoring totals of over 40 points multiple times this season helping Crosby to a Top 10 ranking in TABC.

Haggerty is signed to play for TCU at the next level.

Maupin, a 5-11 combo guard, led Gruver to its second state championship and an unbeaten 33-0 record in 2A this past season, only the 25th team to accomplish the feat. She averaged 22 points per game, 7.5 rebounds and three assists and was named MVP in the state championship game in which she scored 16 points, grabbed 14 rebounds against Stamford.

A Texas Tech signee, Maupin’s represented West Texas with pride and spearheaded now two state champion Gruver teams through her time in high school, the first two in program history in 2020 and now 2022.

These were the 2021-22 finalists for the award.
