Texas Tech announced the official hiring of North Texas’ Grant McCasland to be its new men’s basketball coach Friday afternoon.
The announcement came less than 24 hours after UNT won the NIT Championship over UAB for the program’s first-ever NIT title. McCasland was the head man in Denton sine 2017 after coming over from Arkansas State. He finished with a 135-65 record at North Texas and led the team to a Conference-USA Tournament Championship in 2020-21 where they eventually upset Purdue in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
The Mean Green went 31-7 during his final season. McCasland’s teams never finished in the Top 25 in KenPom defensive efficiency the last two seasons.
CBS’ Matt Norlander reports that associate head coach Ross Hodge will be promoted to take over North Texas following McCasland’s departure.
