@ Matt Stepp

Matt’s first awareness of football was watching the Chicago Bears pummel the Patriots 46-10 in Super Bowl XX. It grew to a full-blown football addiction after he attended the 2001 3A Division I state title game at Kyle Field when his own Everman Bulldogs beat Sinton 25-14. He is now the ultimate Texas high school football insider, breaking the majority of coaching changes throughout the state every offseason, and appearing at countless football-related events year-round.

His passion for the sport and the people that make it possible is unmatched. His deep ties to the coaching community and knack for spotting teams on the rise make his columns and Twitter account must-follows, whether it’s football season or not. For the three or four minutes each year he is not thinking about football, you can find him hanging out with his wife, travelling or eating Texas barbecue.

2020-21 SMU Men's Basketball Preview

After stumbling to a losing record in 2018-2019, SMU might’ve over-achieved going 19-11 last year. That solid performance, combined with a full deck of scholarships and several key players returning has fans thinking a return to the NCAA Tournament is not out of the question this year.

2020-21 SMU Women's Basketball Preview

SMU has seen slow but steady improvement over three years, going from 10 wins, to 11 wins and up to a 13-16 overall mark a year ago. Travis Mays is hopeful this campaign is the one where the Mustangs have that breakout fans have been waiting for.

2020-21 TCU Men's Basketball Preview

In many ways, 2019-2020 was a step back for TCU after three straight winning seasons that included a NIT title in 2017. The main culprits were TCU’s inability to win away (2-11 in road/neutral games) and a lack of offensive consistency.

Raegen Pebley’s squad posted their third straight 20-win season a year ago and appeared well on their way to the NCAA Tournament before COVID-19 canceled the season. TCU finished 22-7, but the majority of that team has graduated.

2020-21 UTA Women's Basketball Preview

After back-to-back 20-win seasons, the UTA Lady Mavericks had to quickly shift course in August to bring in Vanderbilt assistant Shereka Wright to take over a program ready to continue rolling after Krista Gerlich left for Texas Tech.

2020-21 UTA Men's Basketball Preview

The Mavericks suffered several agonizing losses a year ago dropping seven games by six points or less, including a one-point loss in the opening round of the Sun Belt Tournament. The Mavs will be laser-focused on closing that gap this year.

2019-20 SMU Men's Basketball Preview

After withstanding self-imposed scholarship restrictions the past few years, things came crashing down in 2018-2019 as injuries and the lack of depth were key in a 15-17 record a year ago, SMU’s first losing season in six years.

2019-20 SMU Women's Basketball Preview

There’s no doubt 2018-2019 was a rebuilding year for Travis Mays’ squad as the Mustangs fielded one of the youngest teams in the nation a year ago. Four starters are back and there’s plenty of experience in the fold as SMU looks to try and get back into one of the top four spots in the American Athletic Conference.
