Five potential candidates to become next Tarleton WBB head coach

Tarleton officially announced the departure of Misty Wilson as head coach of the women’s basketball program Thursday. Here’s a look at five potential candidates to become the next head coach for the Texans program, including former Baylor assistant Bill Brock.

Tarleton let Misty Wilson go on Wednesday after she spent the last 21 years as a member of the Texans coaching staff, including the last nine as head coach. The Tarleton job will receive plenty of interest, with the Texans only having one more year before being eligible to compete in the NCAA Division women’s tournament. Here is a look at five potential candidates to become the next head coach for the Texans.

Bill Brock - McLennan Community College head coach

Sources indicate that Tarleton is likely looking to make a splash hire, and it’d be tough to find a coach to meet that expectation. A legendary women’s basketball coach in Texas, Brock is currently the head coach at McLennan Community College after spending 13 seasons as the associate head coach under Kim Mulkey at Baylor. Brock reportedly turned down a chance to follow Mulkey to LSU, and sources indicate he could be the top target for the Texans.

Mark Morefield - Former Mary Hardin-Baylor head coach

If Brock is not interested in moving to Stephenville, his son-in-law would be a solid choice. Morefield was let go by Mary Hardin-Baylor in mid-January after a video surfaced of Morefield cursing at his players following an injury during practice. Morefield successfully turned the UMHB women’s program into a perennial winner, and no one doubts his ability to coach. The issues that plagued him at Division III regarding reported promises of playing time to a large roster should not be an issue at Tarleton.

Josh Prock - West Texas A&M head coach

Prock may not provide a national splash factor, but fans and alum who remember him from Tarleton’s days in the Lone Star Conference would be thrilled with this hire. Prock is in his second season with the Lady Buffs, leading WT to the Elite Eight in his first season at the helm. Before arriving in Canyon, Prock spent eight seasons at Eastern New Mexico and led the program to three NCAA Division II tournaments, a first in program history. Prock is a part of the Kelvin Sampson coaching tree, having served as a graduate assistant under Sampson at Oklahoma.

Rebecca Alvidrez - UT Tyler head coach

Alvidrez may be Tarleton's best dark horse candidate. She is currently in her second season in charge of the Patriots and has led UT Tyler to two appearances in the LSC tournament. UT Tyler is 23-6 this season and defeated West Texas A&M on Thursday to advance to the LSC semifinals. Before arriving in Tyler, Alvidrez was a member of Stephen F. Austin’s coaching staff for four years under Mark Kellogg, where she helped lead the Lady ‘Jacks to the NCAA Division I women’s tournament.

Jeff Allen - Collin County Community College head coach

If Tarleton is searching for a head coach that has succeeded in the junior college ranks, they should look in Allen’s direction. Allen has been the head coach at Collin County CC since 2004 and has been named NTJCAC Coach of the Year five times since the start of the 2014 season. Allen owns a remarkable record of 359-185 during his time at Collin County while leading the Cougars to five conference championships in the last eight years.
