TCU’s snub from the NCAA Tournament was somewhat eyebrow raising, but not necessarily a shock.

Kalani Brown's injury-riddled senior season might've cost her the Big XII Player of the Year accolade, but her 15 point per game and 7 rebounds per game effort, was enough to earn her another First-Team All-Conference selection along with fellow junior teammate Lauren Cox, who was named Defensive Player of the Year, and Texas junior Sug Sutton.

At the beginning of the year, Texas Tech's Jarrett Culver had a big weight on his shoulder taking up the scoring load for the departed Zhaire Smith.

In between Thanksgiving and Christmas is the thick of tournament season such as the Katy ISD tournament down in the Houston area, the Georgetown Jack Frost Tournament in Central Texas and the Arlington Classic in the DFW going on right now.

It’s the first full weekend of college basketball and there have already been some…uh let’s say, eye-opening results from the first few nights.

Texas Southern has played in the postseason the past two years and last season missed out sharing the SWAC league title by one win. This year’s team will have a different look with 11 newcomers to offset the loss of guard Joyce Kennerson, last year’s SWAC Player of the Year, who is taking a medical redshirt. Four graduate students include guards Marquia Turner, who played her first three years at Xavier, and Toledo transfer Olivia Cunningham.

Mike Davis built TSU into the SWAC’s most elite program, and now it’s former LSU head coach Johnny Jones assigned to continue the progression. The Tigers are coming off a season in which they won a First Four game in the NCCA Tournament for the first time. Trayvon Reed returns at center but Trae Jefferson, last year’s SWAC Player of the Year, transferred out. LSU graduate transfers Jalyn Patterson and Jeremy Combs will play key roles.
